I made the journey to Barolengo to deliver food for the school feeding programme where Usher attends. The trip was necessary since the school is quite far from home, and I wanted to ensure Usher and other students continues to benefit from this vital programme.
The Importance of School Feeding Programmes
School feeding programmes are targeted social safety nets that provide both educational and health benefits to vulnerable children. They increase enrollment rates, reduce absenteeism, and improve food security at the household level. For children like Usher who attend schools in remote areas, these programmes are not just about nutrition-they’re essential for keeping children in school and giving them a chance for a better future.
In Kenya, school feeding programmes have been pivotal in providing meals to pre-primary and primary school children. The impact of these programmes extends far beyond just providing a meal. Teachers have noted improvements in student concentration and participation, reinforcing the link between nutrition, education, and protection.
The Situation in Our Region
The school feeding programme at Barolengo has become particularly crucial in recent times. Similar to what’s happening in other Counties many learners in our area come from low-income households where access to regular meals is a challenge. Food insecurity has been blamed for high numbers of school dropouts and absenteeism across various counties in Kenya.
Many blessings and lets continue to pray for all the students.
